Tom Mshindi has more than 25 years’ experience in media and communications. He was the editor-in-chief of the Nation Media Group until December 2018. He has experience as a newspaper reporter, writer, sub-editor, managing editor, columnist, university lecturer, UN editor and field communications officer. He has worked as a communications and editorial consultant and has been a managing director in several companies in Kenya and Uganda.
He has led media campaigns against environmental degradation and set up the first health and science newspaper pullout in the region in the 1990s. While in Nigeria, he drove the UNICEF stakeholder mobilization and communications to change behavior. His experience has seen him play critical roles in advocacy on Health, Education, Media, Social Services and Security. As managing director of big media companies in Africa, he has vast experience in navigating regulatory challenges and driving corporate strategy from the very top, an example being leading the NMG companies through the controversial digital migration period.
He has lived and worked in Kenya, US, Nigeria, Uganda and Tanzania. He currently consults on Editing, Writing, Creative Content Development and Marketing, Newsroom Transformation to Digital Operations, Strategic Management, Project Planning, Media Training and Management.
Clifford Machoka is a government affairs, trade blocs, strategic communications and sustainability professional having worked in diverse roles in both the private and international organisation sectors in Africa & Europe over the last 10 years.
He has a broad understanding of the political, socio-economic and business operating environments within East & Central Africa, Horn of Africa and Indian Ocean Islands.Clifford has worked for both blue chip multinational corporations and an international organisation such as the World Trade Organisation (WTO) to drive strategies on trade bloc management with emphasis on WTO, East Africa Community (EAC), Common Market for Eastern & Southern Africa (COMESA) & African Union (AU) including African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), regulatory affairs management including general and tax policy formulation, partnership building, strategic communications, reputation management, investor relations and stakeholder management in complex operating environments.
He has experience working across various sectors including International Organisations, Regional Trade Blocs, Legal, Tobacco, and Media industries.Clifford holds a Masters of Law post-graduate degree (LLM) in Globalisation & Law with a specialisation in International Trade Law from Maastricht University, The Netherlands, an undergraduate Honors Law Degree (B.A., LL.B) from NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad, India and training in Business Leadership & Strategy from the Fast Forward Leadership Program. He is an advocate of the High Court of Kenya.Aside from his career interests, Clifford has a personal interest in driving thought leadership conversations on the future of Africa and shared value initiatives. Outside of work he enjoys travelling, sports including athletics & basketball and dancing.
Emily Waita Macharia
Emily is an experienced government affairs, strategic communications and sustainability professional having worked in diverse roles across Africa and Europe over the last 15 years. She has a broad understanding of the political , social and business operating environments within eastern and southern Africa, Horn of Africa, Indian ocean islands and Francophone Africa.
Emily has worked for 4 blue chip multinational corporations helping them build partnerships, respect and visibility through robust relationships, advocacy and sustainability initiatives in complex working environments.She has experience working across diverse sectors including Not-for-Profit Organizations, an Environmental Lobby, Telecommunications, Tobacco, Food and Beverage industries. Emily holds an Economics Degree from the University of Nairobi as well as post graduate long-term training in Business Leadership and Strategy with accreditation from Strathmore Business School, Gordon Institute of Business Science and Harvard Publishing.Aside from her career interests, she has a personal interest in women in leadership and entrepreneurship initiatives. Outside of work she enjoys youth mentorship, travel, health and fitness.
A seasoned and proven public affairs and communications strategist, Norah Odwesso brings more than 20 years of extensive corporate experience, having held senior leadership positions in notable multinational entities across both Banking and FMCG businesses, with strong presence in various countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Her areas of specialisation span Government relations, Strategic communications, Issues management, Media Relations, Sustainable business and Investor relations.
Having served in senior executive roles, directing critical public affairs work and representing the organisations she has worked have provided her a strong to secure client commitment and drive consistent execution of organisational goals.
She has been instrumental in driving positive outcomes to public affairs and regulatory headwinds faced by the organisations she has worked for. She has also led the delivery of Sustainable business frameworks that integrate sustainable practices to business strategy.
In her roles as both an Executive and Non-Executive Director on various boards, she has strengthened her ability to direct and lead business strategy and to conceptualise initiatives that protect and enhance business reputation while supporting and enabling revenue growth goals.
She has previously served as Non-Executive Director of several organisations, namely Barclays Bank of Kenya Ltd, First Assurance Co. Ltd, Barclays Life Assurance Ltd. She is also a previous Chairperson of the JA, (Junior Achievement), and has also served as a member of the Board of Trustees, for the Gender Violence Recovery Centre in Kenya and the Management University of Africa.
Norah holds an MA from the University of Exeter (UK) and a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce (Hons) from the University of Nairobi. She is also a certified Investor Relations professional.
